Angkentye Yerrtye Ileme
Angkentye yerrtye ileme translates to “bringing back the right names” in Arrernte.
This Arrernte street signs project saw the install of over 60 new street signs around Mparntwe (Alice Springs). These signs provided updated Arrernte spelling, English translations and audio recordings of the correct pronunciation of these Arrernte terms. In recent decades, street signs had been erected in Mparntwe using phonetic spelling systems that made it difficult for community members to understand the meanings of street names.

The street signs feature Arrernte names for plants, animals, birds, trees and grass species and the team saw the opportunity to update these names into the community accepted Central and Eastern Arrernte orthography, or spelling system.

The project was self funded by Indigemoji with support from the Centre for Australian Languages and Linguistics (CALL) at the Batchelor Institute.
This project aimed to share the importance of Arrernte language and culture with the community and to encourage its maintenance keeping it safe for future generations.
